Pieter-Jan Verhoyen is a Belgian pianist, harpsichordist and fortepianist with a passion for historically informed performance practice and Flemish repertoire. He performed with Anima Eterna, the Terra Nova Collective and is the pianist of the Ryelandt Trio. As a piano and harpsichord accompanist he works for the International Flute Seminar Bruges, the Dutch International Flute Competition and STAP Roeselare and collaborates in international masterclasses and competitions.
At the age of six he started taking private piano lessons with Marie-Noëlle Damien. He pursued his piano education with Arlette Vanheste (Conservatorium aan Zee Oostende) and with Heidi Henderickx (young talent class MAGO Antwerp). In April 2014 Pieter-Jan was accepted to study at the Sweelinck Academy, the young talent department of the Royal Conservatory of Amsterdam with Marjes Benoist. Meanwhile he continued his musical studies at the conservatory of his native city. In June 2014 he obtained his diplomas for piano and chamber music, both with the highest distinction. In 2017 he received his bachelor degree with distinction at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in the class of Jan Michiels. In 2019 he received his master degree with distinction at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp in the class of Sergei Edelman. He is currently combining his master in fortepiano with Claire Chevallier at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles with a bachelor in harpsichord with Bart Naessens at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and a postgraduate in piano with Sergei Edelman.
Since 2008 Pieter-Jan took master classes with Levente Kende, André De Groote, Piet Kuijken, Jos Van Immerseel, Richard Egarr, Diana Ketler, Dina Yoffe, Ewa Pobłocka and Catalina Vicens. Pieter-Jan played as a soloist with the Strijkorkest van de Kust, the orchestra of the Conservatory of Bruges and the baroque orchestra of the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles.
In 2008 he won the second prize in the Cantabile Competition for the youth and in the Concours musical de France. In 2009 he became a finalist in the Steinway Piano Competition and won a second prize. In 2010 and 2014 he won a second prize at the Concours de piano de Liège as well. Pieter-Jan won first prizes at the Belfius Classics competition for piano and chamber music. In 2010 he won the Solfege Competition organized in honour of the 500th birthday of the Carillon of Bruges. In 2014 he received the Incentive Award of the Social-cultural Council of Bruges.
In 2008 and 2009 he participated in the international summer school of chamber music of Musica Mundi in Genval. Also in 2009, his pianotrio Trio Telepatico was founded with violinist Jeroen De Beer and violoncellist Martijn Dendievel. The Trio took lessons in Chamber Music at the conservatory of Bruges in Arne Deforce’s class. Meanwhile the ensemble was coached by Arco Baleno and took classes with Marcel Lequeux and Bart van de Roer (Storioni Trio). Together they became prize winners in the Vlamo Competition, the Neerpelt European Music Festival for Young People, Belfius Classics and the Storioni Concours. In 2013 the performed the Concertino for Pianotrio and Orchestra by Alexander Tcherepnin at the Koninklijke Muntschouwburg in Brussels. in 2014 they released their debut cd. They played concerts in Flanders, Germany and the Netherlands.
Together with Polish flutist Natalia Jarzabek Pieter-Jan performed in Flanders, the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom and Poland and released the cd ‘900 miles’, recording Polish and Flemish chamber music. Since 2017 Pieter-Jan plays forms a duo with flutist Ocèane Knop. Together with cellist Valentin Bajou he focuses on chamber music on historical instruments.
Pieter-Jan works as an accompanist for the International Flute Seminar Bruges, the Dutch International Flute Competition and La Monnaie Brussels.Show less
