Pieter-Jan Verhoyen is a Flemish pianist, harpsichordist and fortepianist.
He combines his passion for Flemish repertoire with a historically informed
perspective. His latest CD release with the Ryelandt Trio features the complete piano
trios of Flemish composers Joseph Callaerts and Joseph Ryelandt.
Pieter-Jan regularly performs with Anima Eterna Brugge, the Terra Nova Collective
and the Belgian National Orchestra and he is the pianist of the Ryelandt Trio. As a
piano and harpsichord accompanist he works for the International Flute Seminar
Bruges, the Dutch International Flute Competition, the National Flute Association
(USA) and STAP Roeselare and collaborates in international masterclasses and
competitions. Pieter-Jan played as a soloist with the Strijkorkest van de Kust, the
orchestra of the Conservatory of Bruges and the baroque orchestra of the
Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles.
Pieter-Jan won prizes in national and international competitions like the Sigismundus
Lauxmin International Harpsichord Contest, the Cantabile Competition, the Concours
musical de France, the Steinway Piano Competition, the Concours de piano de Liège
and the Belfius Classics competition for piano and chamber music. In 2010 he won
the Bruges Solfege Competition. In 2014 he received the Incentive Award of the
Social-Cultural Council of Bruges.
After graduating at the Conservatory of Bruges and the Sweelinck Academy, the
young talent department of the Royal Conservatory of Amsterdam, Pieter-Jan studied
piano with Sergei Edelmann, harpsichord with Bart Naessens and fortepiano with
Claire Chevallier at the conservatories of Brussels and Antwerp. He is currently
studying with Menno van Delft at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.
Pieter-Jan took masterclasses with renowned keyboard players such as André De
Groote, Jos Van Immerseel, Richard Egarr, David Breitman and Catalina Vicens. He
participated multiple times in the international summer school of chamber music of
Musica Mundi in Genval. With the Ryelandt Trio he received coaching from the Arco
Baleno ensemble and the Storioni Trio. Together they became prize winners in the
Vlamo Competition, the Neerpelt European Music Festival for Young People, Belfius
Classics and the Storioni Concours. Recently they won 1st prize at the Concours
International Léopold Bellan in France.
Pieter-Jan also frequently performs with pianist Alina Taraban, flutist Océane Knop and
soprano Emilie De Voght.
